How the New Tax Law Changes Your Clothing Donation Deductions
The One Big Beautiful Bill just passed, and it changes the tax math for clothing donors. Here's what it means for your 2026 tax return.

New Jersey is packed with options. Goodwill and Salvation Army cover nearly every county, and collection bins from the Red Cross, Planet Aid, and Vietnam Veterans of America are in shopping centers statewide. The state lets you deduct donations on both your federal and state returns if you itemize. Just watch for unregistered bins. NJ requires a valid registration number on every bin, and if you don't see one, your stuff might be going to a for-profit reseller. Quick Tips
- Check that any bin displays a valid NJ registration number. Unregistered bins are illegal and your stuff may be resold commercially.
- Big Brothers Big Sisters does free home pickup across most of the state. Schedule 3-4 days ahead.
- Many school districts collect gently used uniforms at the end of the year. Check with your district office in May or June.
