The Arc was founded in 1950 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, as a collaboration of parent groups advocating for the rights of children with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD). It has since grown to over 700 local chapters all over the country.
This organization provides information and referral services for persons with I/DD needing legal aid, health and life counseling, special education training, employment consultation, and various online resources, among others.
For companies, including airlines, Arc also provides staffing services and training on improving accessibility and inclusiveness in their day to day operations.
The Arc advocates for legislation that benefits persons with I/DD, and has been instrumental in the establishment of federal disability rights laws, such as the Americans with Disabilities Act.

The organization welcomes financial donations. It also accepts certain types of vehicles: cars, trucks, vans, boats with trailers, and recreational vehicles only.
The main office does not accept item donations, but physical items may be donated to local chapters. The types of donations accepted include clothing, household items, and jewelry. Simply enter in your zip code or address above to find the closest location to you.
If you do find somewhere nearby, make sure to give them a call beforehand to double check that they can accept whatever it is you’re thinking of donating. And if they’re unable to accommodate you, why not give The Salvation Army thrift stores a go instead.
Donors are invited to contact the local chapters nearest to them that maintain thrift shops and/or donation bins, to find out if they offer pickup services.
The main office of The Arc is in Washington, D.C. However, it has chapters in 39 states. States which have the largest number of donations locations include California, New Jersey, Alabama, New York, Florida, and Michigan.
